I dragged myself back to consciousness when the familiar crunch of gravel sounded underneath the wheels of the car. I looked down at Tory who was cuddled into my chest, her fingers threaded through mine. Normally she looked peaceful when she slept, but tense expressions skittered across her face and she kept stirring.

“Anyone going to tell me where we are or what we’re doing here?” The guy in the front seat swung round to look at me. His eyes drifted down to Tory and I tensed, but he didn’t show anything other than concern.

“Damn, whatever they slipped her, it took her out bad. You know she was hallucinating too?”

“Weird,” I muttered, shifting her in my arms. “Lady Victoria? Come on, my lady, wake up.”

She groaned, burying her face into my chest. I was sitting at an odd angle, which was hurting my back, and my right arm was dead where she was lying on it. I felt sick to my stomach, and my head was pounding. Had it just been the two of us, I would have gladly stayed exactly where I was for hours with her snuggled in close to me like that. As it was…

“Hey, man, you look as bad as she does. You guys coming down with something?” Tory’s friend looked over at me, worry in his voice.

I must have looked as bad as I felt. I shook my head and tapped the code to get into the house. I staggered inside, leaning against the wall. Jack followed me in with Tory hanging off his arm, and the friend followed behind.

“Nice place,” he commented, looking around. He meant it was big. All he could see from where he stood was the hallway and the many doors and corridors branching off it.

“Thanks,” I said, leading the way into the main room. The house was an oak frame building, and whereas most of the rooms had smaller windows for security purposes, the entire back wall of the main, open-plan room was glass, looking out into the forest the house was surrounded by. I liked security, but a big part of me craved the open air.

The friend whistled. “Man, bet those cost you a pretty penny.”

I nodded. Even more than he would guess, considering they opened electronically and were thicker than they looked. Bulletproof too, though thankfully I’d never had to test them. Jack dropped the car keys into a dish on a console table that stood near the wall.

He helped Tory over to the sofa where she collapsed onto the cushions. A strong
